what I learned twice

Working in finance does not make you good with your own money.

A hand-ruled account diary lying open on a wooden table, a fountain pen in the fold and a steel cup of chai beside it
my father kept one of these, in rupees

I spent more than a decade in accounting and finance. I could read a company’s books. I could not have told you how much I needed to retire, or what would happen to my family if something happened to me.

Canada is where I closed that gap: the system here, read from the first page, and our own foundation built one layer at a time. I learned this twice, once for a living and once for my family. The second time is what this site is for.

who this is for

People building a financial life in Canada.

Across the Greater Toronto Area. Not products. Understanding.

  • Newcomers

Arrived in the last few years, building credit, a career, and savings from scratch. We did it in 2023, with four suitcases.

  • Families

The years when there is a mortgage or rent, children, parents, and a spreadsheet that never quite closes.

  • Working women

If money was always handled by someone else, this is where you learn to handle it yourself. It is the part of the work I care about most.

  • Business owners

Income that arrives unevenly and the question of what protects the household when it does not arrive at all.

how we work through it

Four layers. One word: SAFE.

Built like a building, from the foundation up. Protection first, then the debt, then the cushion, and only then growth. Most of us start at the top. I did.

Who depends on you, and what happens to them?

This is the layer where education can become a conversation about protection.
